Vol. 69 No. 19

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Principal Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of principal teachers whose salaries were reduced through their schools having fallen into a lower category in consequence of a drop in the average attendance for the two years ended 31st December, 1934 and 1935, and whether principals who suffered in this respect prior to 31st December, 1936, will have their losses restored to them.

The number of principal teachers whose salaries were reduced through the fall of their schools into a lower category in consequence of a decline in the average attendance for the two years ended 31st December, 1934, and 1935, was 70.

The revised regulation, under which the salaries of principal teachers are not reduced when the schools in which they are serving fall into a lower category, was brought into operation with effect as from 1st January, 1937: it is not proposed to extend this concession to cases in which schools fell into a lower category from 1st January, 1936, or from any earlier date.
