Vol. 70 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Waterford Meat Factory.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total amount paid by the Government for cattle for the Waterford meat factory, the total amount received from the company in respect of the cattle; and the total Government liability to the company by way of guarantee.

The total amount paid for cattle for the Waterford factory was £25,174 15s. The total amount received from the company in respect of the cattle was £13,165 9s. 9d. The agreement with the factory provided that if during the first year of its operations the factory was unable to sell its total output of canned beef the Government would purchase up to one-third of the total output at the lowest ruling wholesale prices and terms. No liability arose under this clause of the agreement. The agreement further provided that if it was determined by the Government before its expiration except for certain specified reasons they would pay to the society by way of compensation either a sum of £10,000, or a sum equivalent to the outlay of the society on the buildings and equipment, whichever was the less. The sum of £10,000 has been paid in full and final settlement of the company's claim on determination of the agreement.
