Vol. 71 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Division of Wexford Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state why the application of Joseph Cullen, of Ballyrannell, Glenbrien, County Wexford, for a holding in the sub-division of the lands of Miss Sweetman and Miss Murphy, at Glenbrien, was refused, considering that he lives within a quarter of a mile of the lands divided, and that some of those whose applications were successful live two miles away from it; and if he is aware that he has two horses and two sons to put to work on such land, has no land at present, and has to take grass for his horses two miles away.

The application of Joseph Cullen for land on the estates in question was fully considered by the Land Commission, but owing to the limited area available for distribution it was not found possible to provide him with a parcel on either estate. In the event of other lands in the district being acquired by the Land Commission Joseph Cullen can renew his application for an allotment.

Is the Minister aware that Joseph Cullen has been working for the last 38 years for the county council, that he has got two horses and two sons working, and that he has not a perch of land? He has to buy hay, oats and everything else he requires for the horses. He has also to take grazing for these horses, two miles away from where he lives. I think it very unfair that he was not given an allotment. He was surely entitled to it, anyway.
