Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legislation for Fixing Standard Rents

asked the Minister for Justice if his attention has been directed to the judgment in the Dublin Circuit Court in the case of O'Neill v. Martin and reported in the Irish Law Times Reports, 1937; and whether with a view to obviating the hardships arising from this judgment in numerous similar cases throughout the State, he will introduce proposals for legislation at an early date giving the courts power to fix a standard rent for these types of house lettings by reference to the ascertained standard rents of similar dwellinghouses in the locality in which such applications to fix standard rents are brought.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. As regards the second part, I understand that this particular matter has been brought to the notice of the tribunal which is at present inquiring into the state of the law governing the relationship between landlords and tenants, and I have no doubt that the tribunal will deal with it in its report. In the meantime, I am not prepared to consider the question of introducing proposals for legislation in the matter.
