Vol. 74 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment in Insurable Occupations.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the estimated number of persons in full-time employment weekly in occupations insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts for the year ended 31st March, 1938, as reckoned from the net contribution income for that year.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the estimated number of persons in full-time employment weekly in occupations insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts for the year ended 31st December, 1938, as reckoned from the net contribution income for that year.

I propose replying to questions Nos. 25 and 26 together. Taking the average contribution at 17.3d. per week, the numbers of persons employed in each week of the years ended 31st March, 1938, and 31st December, 1938, estimated from provisional figures for the net contribution income of the Unemployment Fund in those years was on average 255,000 and 257,000 respectively. The expressions "Net Contribution Income" and "in each week" are used in the same sense as in the memoranda "The Trend of Employment and Unemployment," P. Nos. 1852, 2642 and 3142.

Arising out of the Minister's reply: when he speaks of provisional figures, does he imply that full figures will be available soon? If so, will he say when the figures for March and December will be available?

I do not think any figures will be available for this financial year, until the audit is concluded.

Can the Minister say when we can have the figures for March?

I could not say.
