Vol. 74 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Relief Work Statistics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the total number of workers engaged on relief work in rural and urban areas, including public health schemes, road improvement works, development of housing sites, minor improvement schemes and utility works in rural areas, during each of the weeks ended 17th December, 1938; 24th December, 1938; 31st December, 1938; 7th January, 1939; 14th January, 1939.

Owing to the large number of employment schemes in hands in all parts of the country, the weekly returns of employment for the period covered by the question have not yet been finally checked and tabulated, but subject to revision on receipt of some outstanding returns, the best available estimate of the total number of workers engaged on all types of employment schemes in rural and urban areas for the dates quoted are as follows:—

Week ended 17th December, 1938

37,093

Week ended 24th December, 1938

Week ended 31st December, 1938

33,561

Week ended 7th January, 1939
