Vol. 76 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Milk and Dairies Act, 1935.—Erection of Cowsheds.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that cowsheds erected by the Irish Land Commission on lands allotted by them do not comply with the regulations prescribed under the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935; and if he will arrange that cowsheds erected under further schemes conform to the requirements of this Act.

Mr. Boland

This question, which is one of some difficulty, has been raised recently in correspondence by various Deputies and is at present under consideration by the Land Commission. All allottees do not require cowsheds which comply with the regulations of the Milk and Dairies Act, 1935, and to equip every holding with such accommodation would seem to involve the Land Commission in unnecessary expense. Out-offices, with other buildings, are in most cases built by contract and where an allottee desires a departure from the standard plan it is usually arranged that any additional cost will be borne by him. Normally the Land Commission would have no information that an allottee intended to engage in the sale of milk. In the present standard plans of the Land Commission for out-offices, the cowsheds are an integral part. In order to conform to the Milk and Dairies Act Regulations the cowsheds should be erected some distance apart from the other offices, and the extra cost of such separate cowsheds would if made general and borne by the State entail a considerably increased financial liability.
