Vol. 77 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State and Agricultural Labour.

Mr. Brennan

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he has made any recommendation to the Government for a State contribution to farmers employing agricultural labour with a view to ensuring an extension of agricultural production.

I have considered no scheme precisely on the lines mentioned by the Deputy. I had, however, under consideration some time ago the adoption of a farm improvements scheme which would involve payments from public funds to farmers in respect of labour employed for the purpose of improving their holdings, but in view of the circumstances arising out of the outbreak of war further consideration of this scheme has had to be deferred.

Mr. Brennan

Has the Minister considered any other scheme or is it proposed to make any effort to enable farmers, who ought and who, I presume, will be obliged to till more land, to meet a difficult situation and meet the financial strain which will be put upon them by extra tillage?

No schemes are proposed on the lines of subsidising labour.

Mr. Brennan

I am not suggesting anything, but has the Minister any scheme in mind? Is he going to do anything for the people of this country?

I would suggest that the Minister should consider that point when the price for goods is being agreed to. The way to pay labour is to get a good price for your stuff.
