Vol. 78 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Tillage Scheme.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is in a position to indicate any steps which he proposes to take to encourage tenants of labourers' cottages and small farmers to participate in the proposed scheme of increased tillage recently announced by his Department; and what facilities in the matter of the provision of seeds, manures, etc., he is in a position to offer such tenants.

Small farmers generally do a good deal of tillage, and I anticipate that not only will there be no slackening of their efforts in existing circumstances, but that they will do even more than formerly. It would also be most desirable that labourers should use for tillage to the fullest extent possible the plots attached to their cottages. I am not satisfied that the needs of the position are such as to warrant the introduction of any new scheme for the purpose of providing seeds and manures.
