Written Answers. - Maintenance of Prisoners in Mountjoy Prison.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the years 1937, 1938 and 1939, distinguishing between male and female prisoners, (a) the average cost per head per week of providing food for prisoners detained in Mountjoy Prison, and (b) the average overall cost per head per week of maintaining such prisoners.

Notes: (1) Supplies of food, etc., for prisons are paid for quarterly, in arrear. Accordingly, for, say, the year 1939 the figures given above are based on the cost of supplies purchased during the 12 months ended on the 30th September, 1939.

(2) The term "maintaining" in part (b) of above table has been interpreted as including food, clothing, medical attendance, and heating, and to exclude overhead charges proper, i.e., staff, repairs, gratuities, etc.
