Vol. 79 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Water and Sewerage Requirements in Laoghis.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether he is aware that repeated requests have been made to the Laoighis Board of Health from or on behalf of a large number of residents at Newtown, Crettyard, County Laoighis, for a suitable water supply and sewerage scheme; whether he will request the commissioner for the county to submit to him a report from the county medical officer on the necessity for providing such a scheme for the residents of this area.

No proposals in this case have been received in my Department. I understand the Deputy has been in correspondence with the commissioner and has been furnished with the latest information in the matter.

Is it unusal for the Parliamentary Secretary to ask the commissioner concerned to furnish him with a copy of the report of the county medical officer, as requested in the latter portion of the question?

The county medical officer's views on the matter have already been before the Department in the minutes of the proceedings of the board of health and I understand that the secretary of the board of health has forwarded the county medical officer's report to the Deputy for his information.

The Deputy has no power to proceed or to compel the commissioner to do what appears to be required in this case. I suggest to the Parliamentary Secretary that he has a responsibility in this matter.
