Vol. 79 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Written Answers. - Poaching off the Cork Coast.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of persistent poaching by British trawlers within the three-mile limit in the vicinity of Ballinskelligs and Valentia Harbour; and whether in view of the disastrous effect of this poaching on the livelihood of the local fishermen, he will take steps to allocate one of the new torpedo boats to this locality without delay, with a view to preventing the illegal operations of these trawlers.

Complaints have reached my Department concerning steam trawlers of external nationality alleged to be operating within our exclusive fishery limits off that part of the coast referred to by the Deputy and also at other points not far distant Particulars of these complaints have been transmitted for consideration by the Minister for Defence who has now control of the vessels formerly in commission as fishery cruisers as well as the craft of the type mentioned in the question.
