Vol. 80 No. 2

Committee on Finance. - Writ for By-election—Motion (Resumed).

The Government has considered the situation created by the statement made by the Leader of the Opposition in connection with the West Galway by-election. We appreciate the motives which prompted that statement and, indeed, have no wish for a Party contest at this time. The vacancy in Galway, however, has now existed for ten months and the Government feel that it should be filled and that the Opposition Parties should be given an opportunity, if they so desire, to test the feeling of the country on Government policy. Accordingly, as the deceased Deputy belonged to our Party, we propose that the writ be issued and will nominate a candidate. This decision does not necessarily mean a contest, and if others take the same view as the main Opposition Party there will be none. Needless to say, the Government would be very glad indeed if, in the present circumstances, a contest is avoided.

Question agreed to.

Ordered accordingly.
