Vol. 80 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Wexford Ejectments.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is in a position to state the total number of persons who have been evicted by the Wexford Board of Health from labourers' cottages since the 1st January, 1940, the reasons for which these people were put out of their cottages, and the number of these cases in which rent and rates had been paid up to date at the time the notices to quit were issued.

The Department had no information in this matter. An inquiry was addressed to the board of health and particulars, when received, will be sent to the Deputy.

I know of one case in Co. Wexford—at Hayesland, Kilrane— a man who has been living in a house for 50 years and who has his rent paid up to date has got notice to leave. I do not think that that is good enough. Other tenants are coming in and complaining to me that, because they are bachelors or widowers, they are being required to leave their houses. I think that that is unjust to agricultural workers.

I have not the particulars and I cannot discuss the matter until I hear from the board of health.
