Vol. 81 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export of Barley and Oats.

asked the Minister for Agriculture why, in view of the unsatisfactory prices of oats and barley in Éire, licences to export these cereals to Great Britain have been refused.

Licences for the export of oats and barley are not being issued as it is considered advisable to ensure that the available supplies of these cereals should be retained in the country in view of the increasing difficulty in obtaining supplies of imported feeding stuffs in the present emergency.

As regards prices, I would refer the Deputy to the replies I gave to questions addressed to me here on the 2nd October.

Is the Minister not aware that there was an export market for an additional 100,000 barrels of barley, at 30/- per barrel, available, and does he not regard that as a, serious hardship on barley growers who disposed of their produce at the uneconomic price of 17/- to 18/- a barrel?

I do not think the Deputy is right in all his statements.
