Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Soldiers' Dependents' Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state the allowances payable to the dependents of the various ranks of officers and men in the Army.

Married officers of all ranks, who are not provided with public quarters, are paid a lodging, fuel and light allowance of 7/- per day. An additional allowance of 6d. per day is payable in respect of each child over three in number. Where public quarters are provided, these allowances are not payable.

The wives of married non-commissioned officers and men are paid marriage allowance consisting of a compulsory allotment of 1/- per day from the non-commissioned officer's or man's pay, and allowances of 1/- per day in respect of the wife, 1/- in respect of the first child, 6d. in respect of the second child and 3d. in respect of each subsequent child. Where public quarters are occupied by a soldier's family, deductions are made from the marriage allowance in respect of such accommodation.
