Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Intoxicating Liquor Statistics.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state (a) the quantities of beer, spirits, cider and foreign wines retained for home consumption in the calendar year 1940; (b) the number of liquor licences issued in Éire during the year ended 31st March, 1940; (c) the number of clubs in Éire, licensed for the sale of liquor, in the year ended 31st March, 1940, and (d) the amount of duty paid by them on intoxicating liquor during the year ended 31st March, 1940.

(a) The quantities of beer, spirits, cider and foreign wines retained for home consumption in the calendar year, 1940, were as follows:— Beer, 602,925 standard barrels; spirits, 562,403 proof gallons; cider, 168,776 gallons. (This figure does not include the quantity of home-made cider consumed during the period from the 1st January, 1940, to the 8th May, 1940, inclusive, prior to the imposition of the duty on home-made cider on the 9th May, 1940); foreign wines, 424,188 gallons. (b) The number of liquor licences issued in Éire during the year ended the 31st March, 1940, was 15,796; (c) the number of registered clubs in Éire in respect of which duty on purchases of intoxicating liquors was paid in the year ended the 31st March, 1940, was 264; (d) the amount of duty on purchases of intoxicating liquors paid by registered clubs during the year ended the 31st March, 1940, was £2,425 16s. 3d.
