asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether any proposals were submitted to him in regard to the inauguration of a house purchase scheme, and, if so, whether he is in a position to indicate if it is his intention to introduce a scheme on the lines indicated.

Proposals have been put forward for the provision of moneys for the purchase of dwellings. This matter has been under consideration by the Government. The proposals which they have adopted relate to Dublin City and County and will shortly be embodied in a Bill. They include the raising of loans by building societies on the guarantee of the local bodies for the purpose of making advances to persons desiring to purchase their homes and an extension of the percentage which deposits and loans other than guaranteed loans may bear to amounts advanced on mortgages by building societies.
In view of the considerable curtailment of building trade activities, will the Minister do what is possible to expedite the introduction and passage of the Bill?

Is it contemplated in connection with this scheme to invoke the assistance or co-operation of public utility societies or building societies in Great Britain who used to function here some years ago?
