Vol. 82 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Manufacture of Sheet Glass.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the manufacture of sheet glass in Dublin ceased last July and that acute anxiety prevails amongst a considerable body of workers as to whether this industry is suspended for the duration of the war; and if he will state the reason for the present stoppage and when production is likely to be resumed.

The furnace for the manufacture of any kind of glass has only a limited life and at intervals has to be rebuilt. This involves a shutting down of manufacture for a considerable period. There have been difficulties about obtaining the necessary supplies of sand and fuel oil. Sand supplies have now been assured but consideration is still being given as to whether it will be possible to give the company such guarantees as are necessary in respect of continued supplies of fuel oil. A guarantee of supply is necessary to avoid starting the plant and having it closed down after a short period. Until the position of fuel oil supplies has been clarified, manufacture cannot be resumed.
