Written Answers. - Maintenance of Prisoners.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the year 1940 (a) the average weekly cost per head of providing food for prisoners in Portlaoighise Convict Prison, and (b) the average over-all cost per head per week of maintaining prisoners in this prison.

The following is the information:—

(a) Average weekly cost per head of providing food for prisoners in Portlaoighise Prison in the year 1940, 6s.; (b) average over-all cost per head per week of maintaining prisoners in Portlaoighise Prison in the year 1940, 18s.

NOTES. (1) Supplies of food, etc., for prisons are paid for quarterly in arrear. Accordingly, the figures given above at (a) are based on the cost of supplies purchased during the 12 months ended 30th September, 1940. (2) The term "maintaining" at (b) above has been interpreted to include food, clothing, medical attendance, and heating, and to exclude overhead charges proper, i.e., staff, repairs, and gratuities.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of the year 1940, distinguishing between male and female prisoners, (a) the average weekly cost per head of providing food for prisoners detained in Mountjoy Prison, and (b) the average over-all cost per head per week of maintaining such prisoners.

The following is the information:—(a) average cost per head per week of providing food for prisoners in Mountjoy Prison in the year 1940: males, 4/10; females, 4/10. (b) Average over-all cost per head per week of maintaining prisoners in Mountjoy Prison in the year 1940: males, 12/6; females, 12/3.
