Vol. 83 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - National Chest Hospital.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state whether consideration has been given by his Department to the provision of a national chest hospital for the thorough investigation of cases of diseases of the chest, including in particular pulmonary tuberculosis and their treatment by modern methods, including surgical procedures, in view of the fact that such an institution would relieve present pressure on beds in general hospitals and provide suitable facilities for post-graduate study of chest diseases.

The provision of a chest hospital and its place in the scheme for the treatment of tuberculosis has been the subject of public statements in this House, and more recently in the public Press in a statement which dealt with the restrictions on the Hospitals Trust Fund in connection with the provision of new hospitals, consequent upon the increased amount of the fund that has to be set aside for endowment of voluntary hospitals. For that reason the consideration of the provision of a chest hospital has been deferred for the present.
