Vol. 83 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Rationing of Foodstuffs.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Supplies whether, in view of the threatened serious shortage of wheaten meal, he is making any arrangements to ensure fair distribution by rationing wheat, flour and other essential foods necessary for the proper nutrition of all classes of the community.

Provided the public co-operate by an adequate response to my appeals for the utmost economy in the consumption of flour and bread, I anticipate that the stocks of wheat and flour in the country will be sufficient to meet requirements up to next harvest. The position in respect of supplies of all essential foodstuffs is under constant examination in my Department and control of distribution by means of rationing schemes will be resorted to, whenever practicable, if any danger of a shortage of such essential foodstuffs should arise.

Mr. Byrne

Will the Minister say whether, if the public do not co-operate and efforts are made to hoard supplies, he will step in to safeguard supplies for the poorer people?

The arrangements already in force, and which have been in force for some time, make hoarding of these supplies by private individuals impracticable.
