Vol. 83 No. 6

Financial Resolutions (1941-42)—Report (Resumed). - Resolution No. 9—Totalisator Excise Duty.

I move: That the Dáil agree with the Committee on Resolution No. 9.

The Minister undertook on the last day to look into this, and into the following one, No. 10, which it is estimated would bring in £43,000 this year. My impression regarding totalisators is that it is a non-profit-making company, that is to say the shareholders derive no benefit from it. In the few years in which there is a profit made, the profits are devoted towards improving the stakes for races. On the last occasion, the Minister undertook to look into those two matters, with a view to seeing if it were possible to avoid imposing those two taxes. In this case, unless there is an alteration of the Act, my information is that the totalisator would be unable to meet this tax. The other case I already dealt with on the previous day.

I have not had time to go into those yet.

Question put and agreed to.
