asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of the years 1937-38, 1938-39, 1939-40, 1940-41, the number of primary schools paid special grants for the teaching of extra subjects, the extra subjects taught, and the amounts paid in respect of each extra subject.

Special grants are paid only in respect of the teaching of cookery and laundry work as extra subjects. Particulars regarding the payment of grants are as follows:—

School Year

No. of Schools in respect of which grants were paid

Total grants paid in respect of these Schools

1937/38

1938/39

Notice was given in respect of 586 schools that it was intended to teach Cookery and Laundry work for grants during the school-year. Particulars as to the number of schools in which the subject was, in fact, taught, and as to the amount of grants to be paid, will not be available for some considerable time.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in respect of each of the years 1937-38, 1938-39, 1939-40, and 1940-41, the terms under which special increases in capitation grants were made to Irish and bilingual secondary schools, and the total amount of the grants paid in each year, distinguishing between (a) boys, and (b) girls, and (1) Irish, and (2) bilingual.

Secondary schools in which the Irish language is used as a medium of instruction throughout the school year are divided into three classes, namely:—

A. —Schools in which Irish is the sole medium of instruction.

B (1). —Schools in which the time devoted to instruction through Irish is not less than the time devoted to instruction through English.

B (2). —Schools in which at least two subjects are taught through Irish to at least one class, or one subject to two or more classes.

The special increase of the capitation grant to the schools in these categories was paid at the following rates in 1937/38 and 1938/39:—

(a) In the case of a school placed in Class A by a sum not exceeding 25 per cent. of the amount of such grant.

(b) In the case of a school placed in Class B (1), by (i) a sum not exceeding 10 per cent. of the amount of such grant if the extent to which Irish is used as the teaching medium was such that the proportion of the instruction given through Irish in the school was not less than one-half, but less than three-fourths of the total; and (ii) a sum not exceeding 16? per cent. if the proportion of the instruction given through Irish amounted to or exceeded three-fourths of the total. In the case of a modern European language the time devoted to instruction through the medium of that language itself was excluded in determining for the purpose of this regulation the total amount of instruction.

(c) In the case of a school placed in Class B (2), by a sum not exceeding the following percentages of the capitation grants payable in respect of the pupils of the class or classes who received instruction in one or more subjects through Irish: 2½ per cent. for one subject, 5 per cent. for two subjects, 10 per cent. for three or more subjects.

The additional grant paid to a school under (a), (b) or (c) above was further increased by a sum not exceeding 20 per cent. of such additional grant in the case of a school in which not less than half the pupils received instruction in seven subjects which included two languages in addition to Irish and English.

Owing to the necessity for economy in public expenditure during the present emergency the following alterations were made in the rates payable in respect of the school year 1939-40 to schools admitted to Class A, Class B. 1 and Class B. 2, viz.:—

Class A Schools—15 per cent. instead of 25 per cent.

Class B. 1 Schools—10 per cent. instead of 16? per cent.

Class B. 2 Schools—2 per cent., 4 per cent. and 6 per cent. instead of 2½ per cent., 5 per cent. and 10 per cent. respectively.

For a similar reason the regulation providing for a further increase in the additional grant payable in the case of a school in which not less than half the pupils received instruction in seven subjects, which included two languages in addition to Irish and English, was suspended.

The amounts of the Irish and bilingual grants paid to schools in respect of the school years 1937-38, 1938-39, and 1939-40 were:—

asked the Minister for Education if he will state (1) the boys' and (2) the girls' secondary schools to which special increased capitation grants were granted as being (a) Irish, (b) bilingual schools, in each of the years 1937-38 and 1939-40.

The information asked for is contained in the Department's official printed lists of schools of which I am supplying copies to the Deputy. The lists for 1938-39 and 1940-41 contain the registration of the previous school year in each case. Schools in which instruction is given wholly through the medium of Irish are indicated by the letter "A" and the bilingual schools by the symbols "B. 1" and "B. 2."

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of persons admitted to each of the training colleges in each of the years 1938, 1939, 1940, and 1941, and the channels through which they were admitted distinguishing between (1) lay persons and (2) members of religious orders.

Admissions to the training colleges for 1941 will not take place until September next. The information required for 1938, 1939 and 1940 is as follows:—
