Vol. 83 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Family Allowances.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state whether the Departmental Committee appointed to inquire into the question of providing family allowances have completed their investigations; whether he has received their report and whether he can indicate when a scheme of family allowances will be introduced.

The Inter-Departmental Committee which I appointed to examine this matter have not completed their investigations. The question is a complex one and some time may elapse before the committee furnish their report. As regards the concluding portion of the question, I wish to state that no undertaking of any kind has been given by the Government to the effect that a scheme of family allowances will be introduced.

Can the Minister say whether the matter will be sympathetically considered, if the committee report in its favour?

I will wait until I see the report.
