Vol. 83 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Prices of Essential Foodstuffs.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is prepared to subsidise essential foodstuffs so as to bring down their prices in keeping with the determination of the Government to prevent wages rising.

I do not propose to subsidise foodstuffs. The additional allowances in kind which it is proposed to make available for the poorer sections of the community who are dependent upon assistance from various public sources represent, as indicated in my Budget address, the extreme limit of provision for easing the burden of increased prices that financial considerations permit.
