Reports received by the Department of Agriculture indicate that, as compared with last year, there are this season substantially increased acreages under the crops mentioned. These reports are, however, of too general a nature to enable me to estimate, at all reliably, the actual acreages, the announcement of which must, therefore, pend the issue of the customary preliminary statement.
That story would scarcely be true in regard to two other root crops. There is a great diminution in the area under mangolds and turnips.
The preliminary estimates will be out in the course of a week or so, I think.
