Vol. 84 No. 11

Local Elections (Amendment) Bill, 1941—First Stage.

Leave granted to introduce a Bill entitled an Act to amend the Local Elections Act, 1937, by extending until the 30th day of September, 1942, the period within which local elections to which that Act applies are thereby required to be held, and to make provisions consequential on or incidental to such extension.—(Minister for Local Government and Public Health.)

What is intended under this Bill?

I would prefer to leave that until I bring the Bill forward for Second Reading. There is provision made in the Bill for holding local elections at any time between now and September 12 months. The position was that the elections would have to be held before the 30th September.

I will give two to one that the Fianna Fáil Party will not have local elections now.

Second Stage ordered for Thursday, 17th July.
