Vol. 84 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Supplies of Sugar.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he has received complaints as to shortage in sugar supplies in some districts, and if he is aware that at least one firm in Dublin is soliciting supplies in country districts and offering extravagant prices to the detriment of consumers in those areas.

Some complaints of the nature indicated by the Deputy have been received in my Department and have been, or are being investigated.

I am not aware that any firm in Dublin is soliciting supplies of sugar in country districts, as suggested in the second part of the question, but I will be very glad to look into the matter if the Deputy will furnish me with particulars.

Is the Minister aware that very many of the retailers in small country towns have had their supplies cut down? If the Minister is not aware of what is contained in the second portion of my question, may I direct his attention to the fact that I have here a circular issued by a Dublin firm offering a price of £2 10s. per cwt. for sugar? This circular has been issued to country retailers and it states:—

"There is no limit to the quantity of sugar that we will accept and pay cash for."

I have asked the Deputy to furnish me with particulars.

I shall do so. Is the Minister prepared to take action with reference to that?

Certainly.
