Vol. 84 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision of Work.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that very large numbers of people are leaving this country every week to work in Great Britain and in Northern Ireland, and, if so, whether he will say if it is his intention to take any action to provide work for them at home.

I am aware that persons are leaving this country for employment in Great Britain and Northern Ireland. I feel sure that the Deputy is aware of the difficulties which have arisen from the war in Europe and which have adversely affected the employment position in this country. In consequence of these difficulties, the possibility of promoting an expansion of normal employment is not bright. My Department will do everything it can to secure the retention in their employment of the maximum possible number of workers, and is actively exploring the limited field open to new enterprise. I will welcome any constructive proposals the Deputy may wish to submit for consideration.

Does the Government propose to set up the commission that it was bursting to set up six months ago?

Does the Deputy consider that a constructive proposal?

I assume that Deputies are seriously desirous of finishing the questions.
