Vol. 85 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pig Killing Licence Quotas.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in view of the present high production of pigs in County Mayo, he will represent to the Pigs and Bacon Commission the advisability of increasing the killing licence quotas to Castlebar, Claremorris and Sligo bacon curers.

I am satisfied that the action taken by the Pigs and Bacon Commission in buying surplus pigs rather than increasing production quotas for particular factories is the most satisfactory and economic way of dealing with this matter.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he satisfied that it is expedient to purchase pigs in County Mayo and ship them away to the other end of the county?

That has not been done.

Is it expedient to purchase them in Sligo and ship them to Mayo, or from Mayo to Sligo?

That would be wrong.

Well, it has been done. Pigs have been purchased in Ballaghaderreen and shipped to Sligo on the same day and in the same week, and the same is true in regard to Claremorris.
