Vol. 85 No. 6

Written Answers. - Provision for Soldiers' Dependents.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amounts payable by way of pension or otherwise, in the case of a wife and five children, whose husband, being a serving soldier lost his life on military duty, and the authority under which such financial provision is made.

If the soldier's death was not due to any serious negligence or misconduct on his part and if his widow and children were wholly dependent on him at the date of his death his widow would be entitled to receive an allowance of 12/6 a week during widowhood: each child under 18 would be entitled to an allowance of 4/- a week, but the total of the children's allowances would not exceed 16/- a week in all. The statutory authority is Section 15 of and the Seventh Schedule to the Army Pensions Act, 1927.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will state the amount of pension payable weekly in respect of a married soldier with a wife and five dependent children, who became permanently incapacitated as a result of injury on military duty, and the authority under which such financial provision is made.

Assuming that the soldier's incapacity was not due to any serious negligence or misconduct on his part and is not less than 20 per cent., he would be entitled, on discharge from the forces, to a wound pension at the appropriate rate set out in the following table:—
