Vol. 85 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Artificial Manures.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if, in allocating supplies of artificial manures during the coming season, he will consider the claims of the poorer areas like West Cork where farmyard manure, owing to decreased pig production, etc., is not available in necessary quantities, and where the soil has been impoverished by continuous cropping; and will he ensure that artificials will be allocated not so much with reference to previous usage as with reference to the needs of the soil as indicated by the facts set out.

My Department is examining the position as respects the distribution of fertilisers for the coming season with due regard to all the factors involved, including the claims of the poorer tillage areas. In view, however, of the limited quantities available it is improbable that any arrangements which could possibly be made will materially affect the position in any particular area.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state the total amount paid by way of subsidy on artificial manure manufactured for last season.

The total amount paid by way of subsidy on artificial manures for last season was £109,950 8s. 8d.
