Vol. 85 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - School Children's Meal Hours.

Mr. Byrne

asked the Minister for Education if in view of the fact that the School Meals Committee of the City of Dublin have in a recent report made recommendations that a hot meal to school children is preferable to the buns and milk now supplied, and, further, that is the opinion of the committee, school managers, and teachers, that the time allowed for the existing meal and playtime is insufficient, he will make regulations to meet the time difficulty.

It was realised some years ago that a half-hour's midday interval for recreation at national schools was not sufficient where school meals were provided or children were allowed home for dinner. A revision of the regulations was, accordingly, made under which the managers of such schools may extend the recreation interval up to one hour. In the circumstances, no difficulty should arise as regards the period allowed for the taking of a meal and recreation.
