Vol. 85 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Malting of Barley.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware of the fact that the Government order prohibiting the malting of barley has resulted in a large number of persons being disemployed, and whether he is in a position to indicate when the restriction on the malting of barley will be removed.

I am aware that the suspension of malting is likely to affect employment. The matter of the utilisation of the available barley supplies to the best advantage in the present circumstances is under consideration.

Will the Minister say whether the reason for restricting the malting of barley is the possibility that the barley may be required for mixing with bread?

That is right.

If that is so, would the Minister not consider the question of permitting the malting of barley to continue, on the ground that malted barley is better than unmalted barley for mixing with bread?

I do not think so.

In view of the large number of persons who have already lost their employment in this industry, will the Minister say when a decision will be come to? The restriction has now been in operation for about six weeks.

A decision will be arrived at as soon as possible.
