Vol. 85 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Chairmanship of Great Southern Railways Company.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether the person appointed Chairman of the Great Southern Railways Company under Emergency Powers (No. 152) Order, 1942, holds or is deemed to have held shares in his own right in the ordinary stock of the Great Southern Railways Company; and, if so, the amount of such holding and the date on which such stock was acquired.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will say whether he has fixed the remuneration attaching to the position of Chairman of the Great Southern Railways Company under Emergency Powers (No. 152) Order; and, if so, whether he will state the amount of the remuneration and allowances so fixed; further, whether he will say if the position of chairman of the company is a whole-time office; and, if not, whether he will say what arrangements he has made with the Dublin United Transport Company to permit the Chairman of the Great Southern Railways to continue acting as Managing Director of the Dublin United Transport Company.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he will state the conditions in regard to tenure, remuneration, allowances and pension rates under which Mr. A. P. Reynolds was appointed Chairman of the Great Southern Railways Company.

I propose to take Questions Nos. 22, 23 and 24 together. The remuneration of Mr. A. P. Reynolds as Chairman of the Great Southern Railways Company has been fixed at £2,500 per annum. The tenure of the appointment is for the period of the emergency unless the Government determines his appointment at an earlier date. Under Emergency Powers (No. 152) Order the statutory requirement that a director of the Great Southern Railways Company should be the holder of £1,000 ordinary stock has been abrogated. In consequence, Mr. Reynolds does not require to be a stock-holder to act as chairman of the company. Mr. Reynolds will devote to the duties of the office all the time that is necessary to enable him to discharge them fully and I understand that the Dublin United Transport Company has been good enough to make such arrangements as will permit him to do so while continuing to retain his position as managing director of the Dublin United Transport Company.

Is it a fact that this man is to get £2,500 per annum for a part-time job?

For discharging one of the most responsible posts in the country.

So responsible that it does not call for the full time of the officer concerned.

I have not said so.
