Vol. 85 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Freight on Fish.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether he is aware that the British Government are paying the freight on fish from the centres in Britain and Northern Ireland where fish are landed to the wholesale markets, and if he will favourably consider paying freight here from the areas where fish are landed to the wholesale markets in Éire, or to the ports from which the fish is being exported to Britain and thus enable the buyers to pay higher prices to the fishermen.

I am not aware that the British Government are paying such freight, but understand that there is in Britain an arrangement for equalising transport charges, the cost of which is met by a levy on the fish trade. I do not consider that such an arrangement could with advantage be introduced here.
