Vol. 85 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meals for School Children.

Mr. Byrne

(Junior) asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if, in view of the changed circumstances brought about by the recent breakdown in the bread distribution in the Dublin district, he will now give his approval to the Corporation School Meals Committee recommendation for the hot midday meal for school children and an extension of the break in the school day in order to allow the meal to be taken in comfort, and that the time be granted without any additional working time being imposed on the children or their teachers.

As indicated by the Minister for Supplies yesterday, the arrangements made by the Department of Supplies to deal with the distribution of bread in Dublin are now working satisfactorily.

As regards the latter part of the question, I would refer the Deputy to the reply given to him on the 4th ultimo. I may add that the Minister for Education recently sanctioned an alteration in school hours which will enable school children to have the midday meal at home between 12.30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
