Vol. 86 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Harbour Authorities' Finances.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there are several small harbour authorities around our seaboard which are now unable to defray the charges for light, buoys, beacons, and repairs to quays, wages, etc., and whether in view of the fact that sanction for increased dues is of no avail, as there are no dues to be collected, he will say if he can evolve any scheme to keep such harbour authorities in funds until normal coastal trading is restored.

It has been brought to my attention that there are a number of small harbour authorities which are in financial difficulties at the present time owing to the practical cessation of trading to these harbours. There are no funds under my control available for the assistance of such undertakings.

As regards lights at the harbours in question, I am advised that these are not of use to shipping generally and that the cost of their maintenance would not be a proper charge against the General Lighthouse Fund. Instances where the maintenance of lights may be essential in the interests of local fishermen are being brought to the attention of the Department concerned.
