Vol. 86 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wages in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that very great dissatisfaction exists amongst workmen in County Mayo at the rate of wages and conditions of employment obtaining in minor relief and similar schemes, and if he will consider the question of giving better wages and more constant employment.

The Minister is aware that stoppages of work occurred on certain employment schemes in parts of Mayo during the past winter. The rate of wages paid on employment schemes on public roads in County Mayo is that paid on the ordinary county council road works, and the rate for minor relief employment schemes is related to that paid to agricultural labourers. The season for the execution of employment schemes is virtually at an end, and the question of the wages payable on minor employment schemes will again receive consideration in regard to agricultural wages rates before the 1942-43 season commences.
