Vol. 86 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tillage Operations by Land Commission.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state whether any wheat-growing operations have been undertaken by the Land Commission or any other body under the control of his Ministry; and, if so, if he will state (a) the number and location of such operations undertaken, (b) the cost to the State of such operations, (c) the average yield per acre, (d) the profit or loss in bulk on these operations.

I take it that the Deputy's question refers to the arrangements for the tillage of arable land in the hands of the Land Commission pending division. The practice of the Land Commission is to make tillage lettings for as large a proportion as is practicable of such lands rather than to till them directly. Direct tillage is only undertaken in exceptional circumstances and none has, in fact, been yet effected, though the direct tillage of a small area in County Leitrim is in contemplation.
