Vol. 86 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Motor-Cars.

asked the Minister for Supplies whether he is aware that some motorists have taxed and insured their cars during the winter for the purpose of obtaining the petrol ration, which they conserved and intended to use during the summer months; and, if so, whether he will, under the new system of controlled motoring, take steps to permit such motorists to use their cars in the forthcoming summer months.

Petrol supplies for use in private motor vehicles have hitherto been issued on a monthly basis for current use in such vehicles during the month of issue. I am not prepared to issue a permit to any motor vehicle owner merely to enable him to use petrol which he claims he obtained in the past but did not require for use in the month of issue. Representations on this matter have already been made to me in a considerable number of cases and, apart from any question of equity, I am satisfied that if any concession were made it would not be practicable to impose a satisfactory check on the use of such cars.
