Vol. 86 No. 4

Written Answers. - Unregistered Secondary Teachers.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of secondary teachers (distinguishing between lay and religious, and between male and female teachers) holding the degrees and qualifications, including the minimum of three years' teaching experience, entitling them to become registered teachers, who were at December 31st, 1941, or at the latest date for which the information is available, unregistered teachers.

I am not in a position to supply the information asked for as complete and reliable records of the teaching service and qualifications of non-registered teachers are not available in the Department. The only information available regarding the qualifications of these teachers is that contained in the time tables of the schools in which they are at present employed, and that information has been found to be incomplete in some instances. When the degrees held by these teachers are mentioned in the time table, the years in which these degrees have been obtained are not stated, and it is therefore not possible to say whether they were obtained concurrent with the period of teaching experience that the teacher may have given; for purposes of registration teaching experience must not be concurrent with the teacher's period of study for his university degree or diploma.
