Vol. 86 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Provision for Irish Seamen.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether it is his intention to introduce proposals for legislation providing for compensation to be payable to seamen belonging to Irish registered ships who are injured through belligerent action and to the dependents of such seamen in the event of death through such action; and, if so, if he will endeavour to have such proposals introduced at an early date.

It is proposed to deal with the matter referred to by the Deputy by an Order under the Emergency Powers Act, 1939.

In all cases, up to the present, in which crews of Irish ships have suffered through belligerent action, pensions and grants have been awarded to seamen, widows and other dependents on the same scale as that applicable in the case of seamen on ships registered in the United Kingdom. The moneys for the purpose were provided in the Vote for the Marine Service.
