Vol. 86 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Clare Strike.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that 110 men employed in the phosphate mines at Doolin, County Clare, have been on strike during the past six weeks in support of a demand for an increase in wages; whether he is aware that the men are only demanding a wage in the neighbourhood of £2 per week; whether in view of the urgent need for fertilisers he has taken or proposes taking any steps to effect a settlement of the strike; whether he is in a position to say if the provisions of the Conditions of Employment Act are applicable to these men and, if so, whether they have been complied with.

I understand that the men who had been on strike at the phosphate mine at Doolin, County Clare, have returned to work. Pending inquiries I am not in a position to say whether the provisions of the Conditions of Employment Act are applicable to this work. I am having the position investigated.
