Vol. 86 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cloths for Curtains.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he is aware that there is a general shortage of cloths suitable for curtains which are required for carrying out the recent "black-out" Order, and if he has refused to permit the importation into this country of cloths suitable for curtains made of cotton or artificial silk; and, if so, if he will state his reasons and what substitute materials can be provided to enable the "black-out" Order to be carried out adequately by householders.

I am not aware of the extent to which supplies of cloth suitable for curtains which are required for carrying out the recent "blackout" Order are available. I have refused licences for the importation into this country from Great Britain of cloths suitable for curtains made of cotton or artificial silk. I am not aware whether these cloths would be suitable for "black-out" purposes. Licences have been refused for the reasons given in my reply to the Deputy's questions Nos. 13, 14, and 15. I am not in a position to state what substitute materials can be provided to enable the "black-out" Order to be carried out adequately by households but the A.R.P. authorities will, no doubt, advise householders on the proper materials to be used and my Department will consult with these authorities as to any special steps which it is necessary to take with the object of ensuring an adequate supply of such materials.

Can the Minister say when consultations between the A.R.P. authorities and his Department will be entered into?

They have begun.
