Vol. 87 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Motor Vehicle Permits.

asked the Minister for Supplies if, in view of his stated objection to the issue of a single transferable disc to members of essential services with more than one motor vehicle, for the reason that it would give one person in competitive practice an advantage over another, he will take the necessary steps to make such arrangement in the case of clergymen and whole-time officers who are not engaged in competitive practice.

It is obvious from the terms of the Deputy's question that he has misinterpreted the remarks made by me on the 13th instant on the subject of the equitable allocation of petrol allowances amongst doctors. I advise him to read my observations in the Official Report. With regard to his suggestion, I am unable to agree to the issue of a transferable disc to any class of motor-vehicle owner.

asked the Minister for Supplies if he will state whether permits or discs for the use of motor cars have been issued to income-tax collectors; and, if so, whether he will consider granting discs or permits to rate collectors.

Permits or discs have been issued for May to a limited number of collectors of income tax to use their cars for the performance of essential official duties.

I regret that, owing to curtailment of supplies and the need for the strictest economy in the use of petrol, I have not found it possible to permit the use of private motor cars in the case of rate collectors.

Can the Minister say how many income-tax collectors have got discs?

I cannot answer that without notice.
