Vol. 87 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Road Workers' Wages.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he is yet in a position to announce a decision on the proposals submitted by the Kildare County Council to increase the wages of road workers to 37/6 per week.

No, but a decision will be given this week or early next week.

Does the Minister propose to sanction the increase?

The Deputy had better wait and see.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether he received representations over three months ago from the Commissioner administering the affairs of the Kilkenny County Council regarding the wages of road workers and carters; whether he is aware that an increase of 3/- per week was conceded to those men more than two years ago and for a period was actually paid, until the Commissioner was obliged by the Minister's Department to withdraw the increase and suspend its payment; whether he is aware that great dissatisfaction exists throughout County Kilkenny because of the failure of those men to get a reasonable increase in their wages, and whether he is now in a position to say if he is prepared to accede to the present representations of the Commissioner on their behalf.

Proposals to increase road workers' wages were received in April. A decision will be given this week or early next week.
