Vol. 87 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - West Cork Fishery Loans.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state how many outstanding fishery loans existed in West Cork after the passing of the Act of 1931; what was the total sum involved in the indebtedness of that area at that time; and by how much has that sum been since reduced.

The Fisheries (Revision of Loans) Act, 1931, was passed in July, 1931. At that time there were in respect of the West Cork area a total of 128 fishery loans, the balance outstanding on which was £42,978. Of that amount there has since been written off as irrecoverable £29,978; a sum of £750 in all having been collected in cash from the borrowers concerned, together with boats to the value of £1,886 surrendered or taken up under mortgages held thereon.

Would the Minister say what is the exact amount of the balance that is due at the moment?

The balance due is about £10,364.
