Vol. 87 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Ship Aground.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to hold the public inquiry into the circumstances whereunder an Irish registered ship went aground off the north coast of Ireland some weeks ago.

The Deputy's question presumably refers to the stranding of the s.s. "Irish Plane."

A preliminary inquiry under the Merchant Shipping Acts has been held by an officer of my Department. His report has been examined and it has been decided to hold a formal investigation under the Merchant Shipping Acts.

Am I to understand from the Minister that the formal investigation will be held in public, as is the custom in connection with inquiries of this character?

It will be held in the customary manner.

And that is in public?

That is a separate question.

It is not a separate question.

The inquiry will be held in the customary manner.

It is not a separate question. My question reads as follows:—

"To ask the Minister for Industry and Commerce when it is proposed to hold the public inquiry into the circumstances whereunder an Irish registered ship went aground off the north coast of Ireland some weeks ago."

I want to know is that public inquiry going to be held?

The public inquiry contemplated by Section 466 of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1894, will be held.

Thank you.
